Fees for apartment applications can add up

Fees for apartment applications can add up

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's pretty normal these days when you're apartment hunting to be asked to pay an application fee. Those fees can be pretty steep, and can be at least $50 for every application.

In a recent newsletter put out by the Governor's Office of Consumer Protection, someone asked if there is a limit on how much can be charged? The simple answer is no. According to the state's consumer office, property management can charge what they want.

The Governor's Office of Consumer Protection says to ask for a breakdown of where that money goes.  Then, try to negotiate that price down.  Most of that fee goes to running a credit and criminal background check on you.  Consumer protection recommends having one ready -- get it yourself and offer to give them a copy.

However, just because you have a credit report for them doesn't mean they have to take it.

You can get a free credit report by clicking here, or call 1-877-322-8228. You mayalso complete an Annual Credit Report Request Formand mail it to Annual Credit Report Request Service, P.O. Box 105281 Atlanta, Georgia 30348-5281.
