Five Austin firefighters are received a high honor Saturday evening. They are receiving the Medal of Valor, which is the second highest honor a firefighter can receive from the department and it is given for acts that result in the saving a human life from serious danger.
The five men receiving the award are credited with rescuing two children from a house fire in east Austin. That fire broke out in the early morning hours of Monday, November 12, 2012 at a home on East 14th Street.
Two young girls were reportedly sleeping in a small shed attached to the house when the fire started and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Houston.
The men credited with saving their lives are from the crews of Quint 1 and Engine 2.
