Glendale community members help clean up city

GLENDALE, Ariz. -

Hundreds gathered in Glendale to take part in Serve Day, a volunteer driven effort to make the city a better place to live.

The volunteers got their instructions early Saturday morning.

"Painting the house, fixing it up," said Jeffrey Nisbett.

Some of the youngest members of the Community Church of Joy were ready to work and make a difference.

"They'll be happy, they'll feel very good that we are doing this for them," said Emily Nisbett.

Nearly 200 volunteers total of every age group from several churches and organizations participated in Serve Day's eighth year.

Pastor Walt Kallestad, who overlooks the project, calls it a growing success.

"You get so much more than you give. Our people who participated just look forward every year to 'What can I do?' and then they say, 'Well maybe we should do it monthly, maybe we should do it weekly.' We've gotten involved in ongoing projects in the neighborhood. We don't want to just come in for just a one day blitz," said Kallestad.

Volunteers painted four homes in Glendale, they're picking up trash in city parks, they're delivering food and they're also painting the gym at a local elementary school.

"You can come into the neighborhood and you can see the difference that these volunteers have made. We've painted probably 10 homes in this neighborhood, we have cleaned up numerous yards for residents who need that extra help, we've painted house numbers on the curbs," said Angie Wilkie, with City of Glendale.

Wilkie, the neighborhood services coordinator for the City of Glendale, says recipients have a moderate income and are usually elderly or disabled.

The gratitude and words of thanks they feel make the day worth while for those who help.

Serve day focuses on the City of Glendale. If you would like to make a difference, the city offers more than 100 volunteer opportunities throughout the year.
