The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the Austin Fire Department's hiring practices.
According to Austin Fire Chief, Rhoda Mae Kerr, The Department of Justice sent a letter to the City of Austin indicating they have information that the Austin Fire Department "may be engaged in a pattern or practice of discrimination against Hispanics and African Americans."
The Department of Justice will conduct an investigation into AFD's employments practices.
Kerr says she views the investigation not as a condemnation of the fire department's practices but an opportunity.
"Our goal has always been, and remains, to have fair and impartial employment practices for all applicants and employees of the Austin Fire Department. We will fully cooperate with the DOJ investigation. We look forward to the opportunity for us to highlight the improvements we have made to our process through the years, and to learn from others as we go through the investigation," Kerr said.
