Officials: Bus hijacker was CapMetro contract driver
An off duty bus driver, who hijacked a capital metro bus over the weekend before killing himself, was suspended from his job.
Capital Metro says 38-year-old, Salvador Martinez, was suspended in February for violation of the law and company policy. They wouldn't comment on what the violation was.
On Saturday, Martinez hijacked a CapMetro bus around 4:30 p.m. in southeast Austin. He ordered the bus driver and two passengers off the bus. Then he drove the bus to Bastrop where he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Martinez worked for McDonald Transit, which is a contractor for CapMetro.
"All new bus drivers receive six weeks of training, part of that is safety related in addition to driving a vehicle, they deal with customer issues and security issues, issues left on the bus, those types of things, how to deal with difficult people, " said Steve Piper of McDonald Transit.
CapMetro says grief counseling was available for employees Monday.
