Students in West, TX are returning to school today for the first time since last week's deadly fertilizer plant explosion.
As the students and teachers in the area return to class, they will be welcomed back by a team of counselors ready to help them transition back into their everyday lives, during what they know will be a highly-emotional period.
School district leaders were able to move desks and chairs back into the elementary school, which escaped sustaining any damage from the explosion that could be felt nearly fifty miles away. Some West students will be bused to nearby Conally ISD, even if they live in the Waco area.
Plans are also underway for a memorial service to honor the 10 first responders who lost their lives the day of the explosion. The Texas Line of Duty Death Task Force will hold a combined service on April 25 at Baylor University's Ferrell Center, beginning at 2:00 p.m.
