Memorial services planned for slain MIT officer

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Memorial services have been scheduled for slain MIT police officer Sean Collier.

A memorial for Collier will be held Wednesday at Noon on Briggs Field at MIT. The event is open to law enforcement officers and members of the MIT community. Anyone wishing to attend the event will be required to show an MIT ID.

"We grieve with his family, his many friends and his fellow MIT Police officers," said MIT President Rafael Reif. "Officer Sean Collier is someone we could all wish to have had the opportunity to know."

Investigators said Collier was assassinated by Boston Marathon bombing suspects Dzhokhar and Tameralan Tsarnaev as he sat in his cruiser at about 10:20 p.m. Thursday evening. He was monitoring traffic near a campus entrance.

The baby-faced 26-year-old Collier, in just a year on patrol, had impressed both his supervisors and the students as particularly dedicated to his work. A few days before the bombings, he'd asked Chief John DiFava for approval to join the board at a homeless shelter, in a bid to steer people away from problems before they developed.
