Road opens in Aurora after flooding

Posted: Updated:
AURORA, Ill. (Associated Press) -

Officials in the Chicago suburb of Aurora say the last major road affected by flooding is ready for traffic.

City spokesman Dan Ferrelli says Orchard Road reopened on Sunday.

The (Aurora) Beacon-News reports that each of the city's 10 wards were dealing with flood waters since Thursday. The city received 934 calls for service, mostly related to the flood. They received another 226 on Friday.

Cleanup efforts have been ongoing.

The downtown Paramount Theatre flooded and officials there worked around standing water during a 3-day dance competition with 5,000 participants. The 1931 building sustained minimal damage.

Gov. Pat Quinn has declared 41 counties disaster areas. Those designations permit expanded access to emergency resources. Quinn has been touring flood-hit communities around Illinois for days.
