PHOENIX -

A man died following a police pursuit on valley highways and Phoenix streets Friday night.

Earlier in the evening, authorities say officers observed the driver of a red 1996 Chevrolet Beretta commit a traffic violation while traveling southbound on the Interstate 17 access road just north of Bethany Home Road.

When the officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver failed to yield and fled east on Bethany Home, then to 27th Avenue, turned around at a gas station and headed west on Bethany Home towards the highway.  The suspect entered the highway and fled south.

A Department of Public Safety officer later saw the suspect drive east on Interstate 10 and initiated a traffic stop near the 19th Avenue on ramp.  The suspect pulled over and he was taken into custody without incident for failing to yield for detectives.

According to authorities, the suspect and the vehicle were taken to the El Norteno restaurant's parking lot near 7th Avenue and Roosevelt.

"While handcuffed in the rear of the DPS patrol vehicle, the suspect began to complain of being hot and not feeling well. Officers removed the suspect from the car and became concerned about his appearance and the way he was acting," said Officer James Holmes of the Phoenix Police Department.

Holmes adds that when paramedics arrived at the scene to render aid, the suspect began to struggle against their efforts -- while telling officers he had killed his wife and she was in the trunk of his car.

After the suspect was secured and placed onto a stretcher for transport in ambulance to an area hospital, he "appeared to go into what appeared to be cardiac arrest," said Holmes.

Emergency room staffers continued to work on the suspect upon arrival at the hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.

The medical examiner's officer will determine the cause of death.

The 54-year-old suspect's name was not released.  His wife was found safe and she is okay.
