TEMPE, Ariz. -

It was a violent morning outside an east valley office complex near U.S. 60 and Rural Road in an area not used to this type of violence.

The shooter is a criminal defense attorney and this is looking like it was all the result of a love triangle between the attorney, his secretary and the secretary's ex-boyfriend.

When it was all over, the shooter called 911 to turn himself in.

The attorney, who is now the suspect, is Joe Palmisano.  He's been practicing law in Arizona for more than 20 years.

The shooting happened in a parking lot outside his office.  There weren't any witnesses, but plenty of people saw the aftermath and told their co-workers about it.

"He said they heard a pop. He ran out of the office and saw a man holding a gun in the parking lot standing next to a red Volvo," said David Larkin, who works nearby.

Police say the victim is Ryan Hall, the ex-boyfriend of the attorney's secretary.  He was shot once -- survived and then stumbled in to a nearby medical office.

"The victim ran into my office and collapsed on the floor and my medical assistant jumped up ran out and called the police," said Byron Carrick, who works in the area.

The shooter also called the police from his law office.  He wanted to turn himself in.  Not taking any chances, police descended on the complex with their guns drawn.

Police are still trying to sort out the relationship between the attorney, his secretary and the ex-boyfriend, but they say the attorney confessed to his involvement in the shooting.  

You could barely see him in the back of a police car being taken away.

The suspect was booked into jail on a number of charges.  

The victim remains hospitalized and is expected to survive.

Police are talking to the attorney's secretary to see what, if any, involvement she had.
