LA Officials Investigating 13 Rare Meningitis Cases

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) After days of criticism from the gay community, the Los Angeles County Health Department admits they are investigating 13 rare but deadly meningococcal meningitis cases.

The numbers don't amount to an epidemic, health officials admit, explaining that LA gets an average of 25 cases a year. At the same time, they are offering vaccines for low income and uninsured county residents. But again, they don't consider this an epidemic.

Of the 13 cases, four are what they describe as msm, or men who have sex with men, including the two fatalities -- Brett Shaad and RJay Spoon.

As to the other nine, they can't release any information, sex, ages, or nationalities.

The only thing they did confirm is that one of the survivors is an adolescent.

Here is a list of locations offering vaccines:

Harbor UCLA Medical Center

High Desert Multi-service ambulatory care center, in Lancaster LAC USC medical center Hubert HumphreyComprehensive Health Center MLK ambulatory care center Olive View UCLA medical center in sylmar
