"They're going through needles in haystacks." So says SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel, who has 12,000 surveillance cameras and 1,200 live video feeds going into SEPTA's high tech control center.

Nestel says SEPTA Police know exactly what Boston Police and the FBI are coping with as they try to find video tape of whoever is responsible for placing the bombs that went off at the finish line to Monday's Boston Marathon.

"It'll be days before they get something worthwhile that they can then work off of," Nestel told FOX 29.

SEPTA's new police chief says the search for that key piece of video in Boston will not be easy. His officers and technicians can spend hours, even days looking for a suspect on tape from SEPTA's huge network of cameras.

"You get that little piece and then you're able to back track from there," he explained. "It's just getting to that little piece that takes all the time, it's tough."

Nestel says experts in Boston will pour over hours of tape near the blast site before the bombs went off. Then scan the exact time of the explosions and finally look for anything suspicious right after the bombs went off.

"You're looking to see what the offender is doing, who the offender is engaged with. Where the offender came from," Nestel added.

Nestel says teams of detectives and FBI agents will also go through hours of amateur video and hundreds of still pictures taken near the bomb scene. He believes video will give authorities the lead they need to bring the bomber or bombers to justice.

"There is no doubt that they'll get some truly useful piece of evidence on video," he said. "And once they get that they will be able to back track right to pretty much the person's door. That's a game breaker. "
