HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

There was a deadly crash after a suspected drunk driver in a minivan crossed the center line southbound on Woodward in Highland Park slamming head-on into a transport van. The female driver was taking two patients to dialysis as around 3:30 Friday morning - a woman and a 56-year-old man from Highland Park.

"There were three in the transport van, two deceased in the van. There was a female in the back that was actually critical at the hospital," says Highland Park Officer Jeffrey Crouch.

That passenger later died at the hospital. The suspected drunk driver was saved by police.

"The minivan that was going south caught fire. Two of our officers pulled him to safety and got him to the hospital," says Officer Crouch.

He's listed in critical condition. Just a few blocks away from the gruesome scene Highland Park Police had tried to pull over the 30-year-old man driving the minivan because of his erratic driving. He took off, but the police did not give chase because of the heavy rain.

"They were attempting to stop the vehicle, and due to the conditions they felt it wasn't safe to do so," says Highland Park Police Officer Chris Zuellig.

Police are left wondering why the driver didn't stop. Preliminary tests show his blood alcohol level was about three times the legal limit.
