Fifteen law enforcement agencies from all over the state of Texas and even a couple from Aruba and Canada are all at a training site near the Travis County Expo giving their dogs a little training in different scenarios.
There are a number of different real life situations where K9's need to be taken from place to place in a helicopter.
Jimmie Davenport with Austin Police tells FOX 7 they want to make sure they're prepared to take a ride like that so their first time in a helicopter won't actually be in a dangerous situation.
"What this does is acclimate the dog to being placed into a flying helicopter, go to another spot and perform his mission. And then again be brought back to yet another place where the handler, dog and the dog team are placed in a scenario based situation where they can make good decisions," Davenport said.
The DPS chopper had a pretty busy day Thursday so it didn't get here until late. So we're told the agencies will be out here pretty late tonight.
As far as K9 training in general goes, Officer Davenport says a K9's training is never done. You'll train them until the day you retire them.
