A True Gift Of Life: 1 Family's Tragedy, A Miracle For Another

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Two families forever linked by circumstances both tragic and miraculous. From one family's tragedy came a miracle the other family had been praying for.

You wouldn't think a 20-year-old man about to study music in college would have much in common with a four-month-old baby celebrating her first Halloween. But that baby, now nearly three years old, carries a part of Ethan Moyer inside her. He gave her life even as he lost his own.

"It's kindness of strangers to strangers, that's something we don't see that much in this world, and when we do see it, it doesn't get so much publicity," said Dr. Elizabeth Rand, a physician at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

But it should get more publicity, because what Ethan Moyer did just months before his death is all too uncommon. Moyer signed up to be an organ donor. "I think that's a huge thing to do as a 20 year old," Ethan's mom Lin Moyer told Fox 29. "You don't know many people at that age that die and are donors. So I'm very proud of that."

Moyer died on November 2, 2010, after a drunk driver slammed into his car. Just two days earlier, on Halloween, Josie Crawn had been put on an organ donor waiting list. She desperately needed a new liver. "If it weren't for this donation or another donation, her liver disease would have advanced and she would have likely died of complications from her liver disease," Dr. Rand insisted.

Jamie Crawn, Josie's mother, says she can't possibly express all her gratitude for Moyer's donation. "I am forever thankful and forever grateful, and forever thankful for the family that we now have." Because Ethan Moyer's family has now become a part of Josie's family. "In the beginning, you're dealing with grief," Lin Moyer explained. "And then it becomes joy. It's really a beautiful thing to meet all these people."

Becoming an organ donor is as simple as checking a box on your driver's license application. And yet only one to two percent of hospital patients who die become organ donors, even though the need is tremendous. "Nationally, someone is added to the transplant waiting list every 12 minutes," Howard Nathan, the CEO of "Gift of Life" told Fox 29 . "And 18 people die every day because of a lack of an organ," he added.

That could have been Josie. Instead, she'll be the flower girl when Ethan Moyer's sister Rachel gets married in July.
