Lost kayakers spend night on upstate NY river

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Two kayakers who tried to paddle the Neversink River in Sullivan County, N.Y., got lost and spent the night on the river before being found on Monday, the New York State Police said.

The kayakers, who are from Pine Bush, N.Y., set off on the Neversink River from Holiday Mountain at about noon and intended to paddle downstream to Cuddebackville, police said.

But the men encountered several problems. They overturned a few times and also lost some of their paddles, police said.

When night fell, they didn't know where they were so they spent the night on the river.

State troopers used the men's cellphone data to find their cars.

At daybreak, firefighters and state forest rangers prepared for a ground search when a State Police helicopter spotted the boaters along the river near Griffin Road in Forestburgh, authorities said.

The firefighters and rangers then drove through the woods on ATVs and rescued the men, who didn't need medical attention, police said.

The Neversink River is a 55-mile tributary of the Delaware River that begins in Ulster County, snakes through Sullivan and Orange Counties, and then feeds the Delaware near Port Jervis, where New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania meet. The river is popular with anglers, but can be difficult and sometimes impossible to navigate by boat.
