PHILADELPHIA -

Captain Michael Goodwin, who lost his life fighting a fire in Philadelphia's Queen Village neighborhood, was on his way to becoming a battalion chief.

Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers told FOX 29 Sunday that Goodwin had just finished his testing and was on the department's list when he died.

Goodwin fell through the third floor roof during a fire on the 700 block of S. Fourth Street near Fitzwater Street Saturday. Andrew Godlewski, a five-year firefighter veteran, was injured when he tried to save Goodwin's life, Ayers said.

The commissioner says Goodwin had come up through the department over his career and fought fires in some of the city's busiest places. Ayers says Goodwin will be appointed posthumously.

"We're proud of him," Ayers told FOX 29's Dave Kinchen.

Outside of Ladder 7, where Goodwin worked, a growing memorial of flowers could be seen as the community mourns his loss. Flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days in his honor.

The president of the firefighter's union, IAFF Local 22, says a ceremony will be held at city hall Tuesday at noon to honor Goodwin and two other Philadelphia firefighters who lost their lives last year.

"The month of April has been especially cruel to us. Tuesday marks one-year since the tragic deaths of Lt. Robert Neary and Daniel Sweeney and now, nearly a year to the day, we've lost Mike," a statement from IAFF Local 22 president Bill Gault read.

Neary and Sweeney were killed fighting a warehouse fire on York Street on April 9, 2012. Two other firefighters were injured in that fire.
