Lonestar Roundup Car Show kicks off

Posted: Updated:

Austin streets are getting a blast from the past! Thousands of classic cars are in town for the Lonestar Roundup Car Show.

Steve Wertheimer says back in the day while hanging out with musicians like Jimmie Vaughan, who frequented the Continental Club that he owns, he learned they all had two things in common…rock-and-roll and cars.

"This 50s rock and roll stuff and these cars that you see out here, they all go together. The same people love the same thing," Wertheimer said.

So he decided instead of having to drive all the way to California for the really good car shows, he'd start one up here in Austin. So the Lonestar Roundup was born.

When he started the show 12 years ago, 80 cars showed up.

"There's you know 1,500 to 2,000 cars that come into town for this weekend and a lot of these guys, they drive from all over the country from as far away as Washington state, New York, a lot of guys from the west coast and you know, this is their vacation," Wertheimer said.

One car at the show started out as an old Studebaker--the same type of car Fozzie Bear drove around in The Muppet Movie, but after a complete custom job, it looks pretty sweet.

Kyle Cleb brought what started out as an old Studebaker--the same type of car Fozzie Bear drove around in The Muppet Movie, but after a complete custom job, it looks pretty sweet.

"It was a 4-door sedan to start with. We cut it in the middle, cut the top off, shortened it down, welded all the seams up, chopped the top so...it's probably the only one of its kind," Cleb said.

Hot Rodding used to be all about putting a new coat of paint on your car and making it run great. Nowadays, you see a lot of what's called "Rat Rodding." That's making your car intentionally look horrible...yet awesome.

Lynn Stanford has a car like that...a '47 International that was in his granddaddy's garage as a kid.

"Just pulling something out of the weeds and letting your imagination run wild, ya know," Stanford said.

It's kind of like buying a brand new pair of jeans with holes already in them. It gives it a little character.

The car show continues Saturday. Junior Brown is headlining Friday night and James Burton, Elvis Presley's old bandleader will be the musical guest on Saturday night.
