DETROIT (WJBK) -

A building is partially covered in graffiti.  There are shattered windows and paint is peeling.  It is a veritable crack house just stinking up the riverfront.  Who's responsible for this outrage?  Mayor Dave Bing, that's who.

Bing seems to be an expert on bankruptcy because everything he touches seems to go belly up.  There is Bing Steel, his former company.  That went bust.  Then there is the City of Detroit.  The state recently yanked that out of his hands.  Then there is the dead fish of Watermark Development.

Back in 2007 before Bing was mayor, he got some investors together and raised a couple of million dollars to build some luxury condominiums.  He also got a $700,000 loan from the city, and they let him use a waterfront property.  Long story short, Bing became mayor, the project went in the dumper, and the city took the property back.  Now the city wants to sell the property for $3 million, but they can't because of the eyesore.

If you or I got booted off our property and left our crap behind, the city would come in, tear it down, fine us, and then send us the bill, but that doesn't happen I guess when you are the mayor.

"We want you to do business in Detroit, we just want you to do it legally," Bing said during his 2013 State of the City address.

I called City Hall for a comment and guess what, they hung up on me.  However, that doesn't change the facts.  Dave Bing, you're the "Deadbeat of the Week".

Super Bowl XLVIII is in New York.  Well, not exactly.  The Super Bowl's host city is actually East Rutherford, N.J.  Sometimes it's hard to get respect in America if you're not from places like NYC or LA.

In another installment of The Americans with Charlie LeDuff, Charlie and his crew head to Williston, North Dakota, where the oil boom is making the small town the epicenter of opportunity and big city problems.
Tens of thousands of Americans are drifting into places like Williston, North Dakota where the oil boom is making the small town the epicenter of opportunity.

If you're willing to work 100 hours a week you could make $100,000 in a year.  Along with opportunity there are problems and a changing landscape to small town life that's as harsh as winter on the northern planes.
