Wayne St. doctor offers warning to distance runners

A Wayne State University doctor says distance runners may want to think twice about their next marathon.

In an article published Wednesday, Dr. Joel Kahn, Clinical Professor of Cardiology at Wayne St.'s School of Medicine, says studies show competing in marathons strains the heart for hours to days after the event and could increase the chance of heart events in coming years.

Kahn says MRI results in as many as 10% of regular marathon runners showed late abnormalities, such as fibrosis, or scars in the heart.

Kahn says research shows the "sweet spot" of running was a medium pace, no more than three times a week, and less than 2.5 hours total per week.

Kahn's exercise suggestions:
- Limit intense exercise to 45-60 minutes
- Cross train
- Daily light to moderate activities
- If must run a marathon, do it early in life and transition to other activities after
