Congressman Bill Flores discusses immigration reform at town hall meeting

Posted: Updated:

We're expecting landmark federal legislation on immigration reform in the coming weeks.

Tonight was the third town hall meeting Congressman Bill Flores has conducted this week in Texas to get opinions and ideas from his constituents.

At times, the mood was thick with some tense and truly uncomfortable moments.

Even though the meeting format revolved around written questions, there were still some outbursts.

The meeting was meant to address lots of things happening in Washington but most everyone in attendance seemed to want to hear about immigration reform.

Congressman Flores says he doesn't support a pathway to citizenship.

"Most of the folks that have come here illegally are here for economic opportunity or to have a better future for their families.  They're not here to become citizens.  And so what I would propose is that we have a path to legal status so that those folks that are here illegally reconcile with the law and then they get some sort of temporary visa, maybe permanent residency status," Flores said.

FOX 7 spoke with Manuel Ramirez.  He's what's called a "dreamer."  He was brought here illegally by his parents when he was 8 years old.

He asked Flores if he supported a pathway to citizenship.

"He didn't really want to answer my question.  And at the end he answered pretty rudely saying 'no.'  It almost felt like he didn't want my parents to be with me because of the deportation proceedings.  And their fear of being deported and I guess my fear of losing my parents...  So...I'm pretty upset right now," Ramirez said.

Flores says he prefers a comprehensive set of solutions because he says much like putting together a sandwich with pickles and meat, not everyone is going to like every part of it.

And if you put it all together, he thinks it will hurt the chances of the solution succeeding.
