Train derailment delays MetroRail service

Posted: Updated:

Crews are still working to remove six derailed freight cars from a section of track in East Austin.

According to Capital Metro, at around 4:30 a.m., a freight train went off a section of track between Tillery and E. 6th Street. A total of six freight cars, out of 75, went off the track. The derailed train is blocking some intersections in east Austin, at Pleasant Valley and 7th Street.

Crews have re-railed one of the six cars.

Capital Metro will continue to shuttle passenger by bus between Downtown, Plaza Saltillo and MLK Stations for the remainder of the day. MetroRail service is not affected between MLK and Leander Stations, and for the most part, trains will run their regular posted schedules between those stations.

Capital Metro reports that intersections at Pedernales and 6th Street are still blocked, and will remain so for some time.

However, officials say service on Thursday will resume as normal from Leander to Downtown.
