PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - Sheriff's deputies in Yavapai County say two large metal animal statues missing from the yard of a home in rural Prescott were not stolen after all.

The sheriff's office asked for the public's help finding them on Tuesday after the homeowner reported they were missing.

Sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn says the original owner heard media reports and contacted the homeowner Wednesday, saying he had picked them up from the property and brought them to Phoenix. The owner had left them when the property was sold eight years ago and always intended to move them. A note he left was overlooked, prompting the theft report from the current homeowner.

The statues depict a bear and an elk.

D'Evelyn says the original owner now plans to return them to the current homeowner.
