ABIA gives travelers a taste of Austin culture

Posted: Updated:

2012 was the busiest year ever for ABIA and last month could be the busiest March on record for the airport with so many events taking place here in Austin.

With F1, SXSW and many conferences hosted here, more airlines are adding flights to Austin all the time. So, it only makes sense that visitors should get a sneak peek at all Austin has to offer when they first arrive.

Austin band, The Wheeler Brothers are playing a few songs to celebrate the release of their brand new album and they're performing at the airport.

"This is the coolest airport in the world," said musician Ray Benson.

Almost 14 years ago Texas musician Ray Benson helped bring live music to ABIA and it's been expanding ever since.

"This is the live music capital of the world supposedly and we better keep it that way. This is amazing. People come through here and can't believe there's over 20 shows a week at the airport," Benson said.

"I think it would be a good place to stop by when you're flying in to catch a couple songs before you check out Stubbs or Antone's or Emo's," said Nolan Wheeler of the Wheeler Brothers.

Passengers can watch a show and grab some grub.

From TexMex to BBQ, some of Austin's best food can be found here at the airport. Austin favorite Salt Lick is here. The brisket is smoked daily and brought in. Just take a look at all that.

There are more than 20 different dining options to choose from.

Of course you're going to want to finish everything off with Austin's own Amy's Ice Cream.

"I think it's a great taste of Austin before they walk out of the airport," said Wheeler.

In 2012, 54.5 tons of brisket was sold here at ABIA and there were more than 800 live music performances.
