Posted: Updated:

Austin Fire investigators have charged two people with arson after they say the suspects caused an explosion in an apartment while trying to cook marijuana last week.

Nicole Mann, 25, and Ryan Connell, 26, were both charged while they are recuperating in the hospital. Both were injured in the blast and taken to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio for treatment. They suffered severe burns and broken bones.

On March 27 firefighters were called to an apartment fire and explosion in the 7700 block of South I-35. When firefighters arrived, they saw that the walls had been pushed out from the foundation and debris was scattered outside the apartment. According to court paperwork, the firefighters also discovered evidence of a drug operation.

Fire investigators were called to the scene to investigate. According to the arrest affidavit, investigators determined the fire was caused by Mann and Connell. Investigators said the two were using liquid butane to extract THC from Marijuana.
