Dangers Of Geotagging Apps For Kids

Posted: Updated:

Could the GPS app that you're using to keep track of your teens' whereabouts actually be putting them in harm's way?

There's growing concern that the information used in tracking apps and on social media might be putting your children at risk.

Tech-life expert, Stephanie Humphrey, joined "Good Day" Monday morning with more details.

Humphrey said that geotagging happens when people link their location information to apps, text messages, and even photos.

"It's basically broadcasting their location at any given point in time," Humphrey said.

Humphrey warned that location information may be attached to photos without you knowing it and recommended going into each individual app on your phone to disable the location-tagging feature.

She also said that a 2010 study showed that 26 percent of online predators were using this kind of tracking information to get to kids, and that we can assume the number is higher today.
