Man Strikes Out With Stolen Phillies Season Tickets

Man Strikes Out With Stolen Phillies Season Tickets

Posted: Updated:
WILMINGTON, Del. -

Forty-year-old Scott Lascala of Newark, apparently thought he was smart enough to swipe $37,000 worth of Phillies tickets and not get caught.

He was wrong, police say.

"He definitely struck out," said Cpl. Mark Ivey of the Wilmington Police. "I'm surprised he thought he was going to get away with it."

Wilmington police say it all started when tickets for 81 Phillies home games in the Diamond Club at Citizens Bank Park were being delivered to the Wilmington News Journal. Instead, they were delivered on Feb. 22 to 1209 North Orange Street, where Lascala works in the mailroom. He signed for the package.

"He opened it and, instead of doing the right thing and returning the tickets, he decided to keep them for himself," Ivey told FOX 29.

Police say Lascala started giving the tickets to friends and they started selling them on Craigslist.com.

Investigators got wind of the scheme and set up a little sting operation. They arranged to meet one of Lascala's pals at a parking lot at Lea Boulevard and North Market Street to buy some of the tickets.

"They met up with the guy. Took him into custody and he lead them to Mr. Lascala," Ivey explained.

After further investigation it was determined that the seller was unaware the tickets were in fact stolen, police said. The seller was not charged.

Lascala was released pending further investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service but turned himself in to Wilmington police headquarters, where he posted $2,000 bail.

Investigators retrieved some of the 324 Phillies tickets and 81 parking passes, but some were sold to unsuspecting Phillies fans on Craigslist. Those tickets have since been voided by the Phillies.

"He's being charged for both giving them away and selling them. He shouldn't have taken them, they weren't his," Ivey added. "Probably should have followed that old saying, 'If it isn't yours, don't touch it.'"

Anyone who may have bought Diamond Club tickets online for Section G, Row 12,  Seats 7, 8, 9 and 10, those tickets have been voided. You should contact Wilmington police at 302-576-3670.

Lascala was charged with theft and conspiracy, then released on $2,000 bail, pending further investigation by the US Postal Service, FOX 29's Dave Schratwieser reported.

    NICE EASTER WEEKEND

The first half of the holiday weekend has been great and Easter Sunday looks just as nice. Clouds thin out late tonight with temperatures falling back to the 40s.

Initially it'll be jacket weather early Sunday morning but plenty of sunshine will warm us into the 60s by afternoon.  High temperatures will be a few degrees cooler than Saturday.

It will be noticeably cooler and breezy at the shore with highs in the low 50s.  Quiet conditions continue into Monday.
