How much is Jodi Arias' trial costing the taxpayers?

Death penalty cases are always expensive, and the trial of Jodi Arias is no exception.

Taxpayers in Maricopa County have shelled out $838,000 so far to defend Jodi Arias -- and that number will only go higher.

There's a hearing in court Wednesday morning to see if we can get a full breakdown of how the money was spent. But there are a few things we know already.

Dr. Richard Samuels, a defense expert witness who said Jodi suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, gets paid $250 an hour.

And those hours added up for Samuels. He spent nearly 6 full days on the stand. Let's just estimate 6 hours a day spent in court.

It's just an estimate, but Samuels would have made a cool $9,000 testifying over the last week.

Now there is a new expert on the stand. Dr. Alyce LaViolette. She is getting paid $250 an hour for research, $300 an hour for testimony.

She testified for about an hour Monday, and we'll estimate a six hour full day accounting for Tuesday.

That's $2,100 dollars for her so far just in testimony -- not counting research, and she's expected to be on the stand for a week. That will add up.

It makes the attorneys in this case look affordable by comparison.

Lead defense attorney Kirk Nurmi was hired hourly by the county. He is in private practice now, but records show when he was a public defender in 2009 he made an annual salary of $90,438.

Prosecutor Juan Martinez, in that same 2009 public records report, was shown to have a salary of $130,229.

Wednesday we can get some more precise numbers as to how much money, you the taxpayer, have spent on this case.
