Hundreds of thousands of Michiganders have no idea their bodies are having a tough time controlling their blood sugar.

"Diabetes is a very subtle disease. It's difficult to diagnose. Most of the time people walk into the office who have no idea they have it," said Dr. Opada Alzohaili, M.D. at Oakwood Healthcare System.

"Diabetes doesn't give you symptoms until the sugar is so high. You start going to the bathroom a lot, drinking a lot of water, thirsty all the time," Alzohaili warned.

There are two main types of Diabetes. Type One is when the body does not produce insulin, that's the hormone needed to convert the sugar you eat into energy. Type Two is much more common. That's when the body doesn't make enough insulin or the cells ignore it. Obesity is one of the main risk factors in Type Two.

Dr. Alzohaili said,"We used to say Type One diabetes was a child's disease and Type Two is for adults. People age 30 or older get Type Two diabetes. But lately I'm seeing Type Two diabetes in 7 and 8 year olds. Because of obesity I've seen a kid who is 280 pounds. That's something we've never seen this before."

Diabetes can harm your eyes, your kidneys and your heart.  But the good news is, once diagnosed, diabetes can be managed with medication and for anyone who's on the pre-diabetic path, you can stop it!

Dr. Alzohaili recommends eating healthy, exercise, be active. Lift weights to build muscle, eat small, frequent meals, add more protein, less carbs, get rid of the juices, get rid of the pop. Those are huge steps.
