Man pleads not guilty in deadly Phoenix drug deal

PHOENIX (AP) - A man accused in a drug deal that turned deadly in Phoenix has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and selling marijuana.

Maricopa County prosecutors say 29-year-old Daniel Albert Alvarado entered his plea Wednesday. His pretrial conference is scheduled for May 6.

Authorities say Alvarado and another man went to a Phoenix home planning to sell up to 15 pounds of marijuana on June 2, 2012.

They met with three men to discuss the drug deal when the other men pulled out handguns and fired at Alvarado and his partner.

Alvarado ran from the home and wasn't injured, but his partner later died from gunshot wounds.

Alvarado was arrested and held on a $500,000 bond in the case.
