Massive crowds this past week led to the most calls Austin-Travis EMS has ever received during SXSW. But thanks to new EMS transportation methods officials say that they were well prepared.
ATCEMS commander Wesley Hopkins says that medics responded to 381 incidents throughout the week. Compared to a non-SXSW eight day time frame that was a 165 percent increase in calls.
"This is a huge increase for us. We have seen a steady increase over past years but this was quite the dramatic increase for us this year," Hopkins said.
In order to speed up the transportation process Hopkins says they put multiple patients in the back of their ambulances-allowing them to respond to calls in a matter of seconds. ATCEMS plans to add even more safety resources next year.
