State Representative John Zerwas from Simonton has introduced a bill to restructure Medicaid in Texas.
The bill was introduced in the Texas Legislature to confront federally mandated health care reform.
Zerwas said he introduced the bill because the current Medicaid program is not sustainable. He hopes lawmakers can come up with a different program that is better suited for the state.
He said he is looking at what Arkansas plans to do. Lawmakers in that state plan to use federal funds for health insurance in the private sector.
Zerwas also said that money that is being forced into Medicaid should go for things that are important to the state.
"The cost for these programs is far outrunning the amount of revenue that we're bringing in. and that then limits our ability to deliver on other programs that the state has a high priority for, which is education, public safety, infrastructure, and water resources and things of that nature," Zerwas said.
