Investigators say 25 storage units were burglarized before a fire started at Lone Star Self Storage in South Austin. Now a joint investigation between AFD and APD is underway.
A passerby driving along Ben White spotted the smoke rising and called 911 around 3 a.m.
Firefighters discovered the flames and signs of a crime. Battalion Chief Thayer Smith says it's apparent someone broke into the facility. Crews worked to put out the fire. Three units have heavy fire damage and the others nearby have smoke damage.
"We're not sure what caused the fire or it if was intentionally set or not," explained Smith that's something arson investigators are working on.
Austin Police are taking the lead on the burglary investigation. It's not clear how many people may have been involved or what all was taken.
