NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A grand jury indicted a young man in the stabbing of a state trooper who was patrolling the state government complex in Albany, N.Y., the Albany County district attorney announced Friday.

Eric Green, 18, of Albany, is charged with attempted murder in the first degree, assault in the first degree, aggravated assault upon a police officer, and robbery in the first degree, District Attorney P. David Soares said.

Green is accused of approaching Trooper Rodney L. Smith on March 3, 2013, and told him he was new in town and needed help, police said.

As the trooper was checking the Green's ID, he stabbed Smith in the neck on the left side with a steak knife, police said.

While fighting off the attack, Smith suffered stab wounds and cuts to his neck, face, hands, and arms, police said.

Green grabbed the trooper's police radio and ran away, police said.

Smith was treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital and was released.

Police captured Green two days later. He remains in custody without bail.
