PHILADELPHIA -

Dozens packed the Bright Hope Baptist Church in Philadelphia Sunday for a memorial service held in honor of former superintendent Dr. Arlene Ackerman.

Ackerman died in February of pancreatic cancer.

Church leaders say Ackerman was a member of the Bright Hope Baptist Church during her time as the School District of Philadelphia's superintendent.

Ackerman began her career with the district in 2008 but left last year. Although praised with improving areas of education in Philadelphia, she also faced harsh criticism.
