UNION CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Public officials in northern New Jersey are offering suggestions to minimize the impact of a planned major roadway closure.

The state Department of Transportation has said beginning next year the inbound lanes of the Pulaski Skyway will close for two years to enable the repair of the 80-year-old structure.

The state Assembly Transportation Committee held a special hearing on the matter Thursday in Union City.

Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy and others said traffic is already at the breaking point during rush hour. He proposed adding parking at the Secaucus Junction rail station that would connect to light rail and shuttle bus service.

DOT officials estimate that closing the lanes instead of restricting work to nights and weekends will save $200 million and four years of construction time.
