NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

After a tractor trailer struck and killed a 6-year-old boy near his school in Harlem on Thursday, police pulled a school crossing guard off the job.

The boy, identified as Amar Diarrosova, of E. 106th Street, was crossing First Avenue east to west in the crosswalk and a tractor-trailer traveling westbound on 117th St. made a right turn onto First Avenue and struck the child.

EMS transported Amar to Harlem Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The boy's backpack lay in the street after the incident.

The area was cordoned off by police crime tape but police say no criminality was suspected.

Police issued the driver two summonses: failure to yield to pedestrian and failure to exercise due care, which are citations and not crimes.

A source told Fox 5's Lisa Evers Thursday afternoon that a school crossing guard who was supposed to be on duty at the intersection was not there.

Later Thursday evening, the NYPD confirmed that the department suspended crossing guard Flavia Roman, 55, for being "off post."
