An Austin man has been charged after authorities say he hit a man riding a horse.
The crash occurred in the 12100 block of Moore Road Sunday night.
According to DPS troopers, 39-year-old Derryl Drew Hickman was traveling west, came over a hill and struck the man and horse.
Witnesses say Hickman stopped and exited the vehicle briefly, then left the scene without providing his name or liability of insurance information.
The victim was transported to UMC Brackenridge for treatment for his injuries, a broken leg. The horse died at the scene.
DPS Investigators tracked Hickman by the license plate number provided by witnesses. During an interview, Hickman told DPS officers that he thought he struck a deer. After he stopped he realized he hit a horse and rider. He said he left the scene after he was threatened by an individual with a knife.
Hickman was charged with failure to stop and render aid, a third degree felony.
