Man who escaped 2 jails returned to 4th Ave Jail

Rocky Marquez Rocky Marquez

Fool detention officers once, shame on you. Fool detention officers twice…

He was caught on surveillance camera walking right out of the 4th Avenue Jail after assuming the identity of a fellow inmate who was set for release.

But this wasn't the only time suspect Rocky Marquez pulled off this stunt. After escaping in Phoenix, Marquez fled east and was arrested last month in Detroit. But get this -- he managed to escape again!

Tuesday, US Marshals found Marquez hiding out in Hermosillo, Mexico. He arrived at the 4th Ave Jail Wednesday night.

Rocky Marquez was able to get out jail twice by convincing fellow inmates to switch IDs.

He pulled the same stunt Detroit.

"We were amazed that he escaped a second time. Especially using the exact same ruse that he used in Maricopa County," said David Gonzales, US Marshal for the District of Arizona.

And Marquez didn't just pick any inmate.

"He was able to convince, in both instances, fellow prisoners that looked similar to him in height, weight and age. To convince them to switch ID's and then offered them financial assistance which he did do," said Gonzales.

The 34-year-old escaped from the Lower Buckeye Jail in May of last year. It took US Marshals 8 months to track him down in Detroit.

He was wanted for a number of crimes including influencing a witness, perjury, forgery, DUI, and that's just to name a few.

When they found him in January, he had a loaded AK-47 nearby. But days after being booked in Detroit, he was free again.

"He has friends and relatives who can hide him out for days. He has the resources, the ability to assume different identities. But we were able to stay on top of that as much as we could."

Marshals tracked him to an apartment in Hermosillo, Mexico and arrested him Tuesday. When he gets to back to Maricopa County, he'll be placed on a 23-hour lockdown to prevent him from trying this again.

Marquez was arrested with his girlfriend's mom. Apparently she helped him get out of jail in Detroit and get him to Mexico.

Marquez is on 23-hour lockdown in the 4th Ave Jail -- in case he tries to pull something like this again.
