PHILADELPHIA -

Area Catholics offered prayers for Pope Benedict XVI during a special mass held Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia.

For many, the pope's resignation marks a time of uncertainty.

The mass was held to celebrate the ministry of Pope Benedict XVI, the Philadelphia Archdiocese said.

Earlier, the Pope gave his final Sunday blessing in front of a massive crowd at the Vatican.

On Thursday, Pope Benedict XVI will become the first pope to have resigned from the papacy in centuries.

As many area Catholics focus on the future, some pledge to watch the electing process closely.

Most people FOX 29 met Sunday say they are optimistic and see the selection as a time to embrace change.
