DETROIT (WJBK) -
The driver accused of speeding and causing a deadly crash is now charged with murder. The crash killed a three-year-old girl and left several other people injured.
21-year-old Stephen Holland limped up to the camera during his video arraignment wearing a neck brace and holding his hand over his chest presumably from injuries he suffered in a devastating crash.
Police said on Sunday afternoon, Holland was speeding when he blew through a stop sign and slammed into a parked car at Wildermere and Thatcher in Detroit. A three-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the hospital. Three other people were seriously hurt and are still being treated.
Holland is now charged with second-degree murder and several additional counts of reckless driving. We are told he just got his driver's license a month ago. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf, and his attorney told the judge he was just a few doors from home when the crash took place.
The attorney also said his client is a high school graduate with no prior criminal record. He called the accident a tragedy, but the judge called the allegations inexcusable and pointed out that police believe Holland was speeding up to 80 miles an hour in a residential neighborhood when he lost control. It is believed the child that died was not in a car seat.
Holland's attorney did not stick around and talk to reporters. His client's bond was set at $250,000 cash, and he could face up to life in prison if convicted.
