Woman charged for theft in adoption scam

Posted: Updated:

A woman is facing theft charges after authorities say she scammed a family who was seeking to adopt two children.

According to Police, Shawn Danene Harty was paid over $1,700 in various adoption fees by a family who was attempting to adopt two girls from Harty's organization called Truth, Family, Love and Justice Foundation.

The victims met Harty through a family member. Harty told the victims she recently had custody of two girls who needed a family. She said the girls' mother had been murdered by their father while the girls slept in the next room.

After hearing the tragic story, they offered to adopt the girls. The family paid the fees and remained in contact with Harty. The family became suspicious when Harty began making excuses to account for delays in finalizing the adoption.

The victims started looking into Harty's foundation and discovered it was a scam. They also discovered that the "girls" did not exist. Harty used photos from the internet to show the victims.

Shawn Harty was charged with theft, a state jail felony.
