A late night crash is causing problems for morning commuters. Austin Police say around 11 p.m. Thursday two 18-wheelers crashed on I-35 underneath the overpass at Riverside Drive.
According to authorities, the driver of one of the big rigs was headed northbound on I-35 when lost control of the truck, crossed the median, and struck a southbound truck hauling car batteries.
"One of the trucks jack-knifed up under the overpass causing it to become disabled," explained Cpl. Chad Martinka with APD.
It is not known exactly how much battery acid spilled out onto the highway at this time. A private environmental crew is inspecting each battery to make sure there are no cracks or leaks. Crews will then transfer each pallet of batteries on to another truck to clear the scene.
Traffic is being diverted on to the frontage road. Police are asking people to avoid the area if they can.
It is not yet clear when the southbound lanes of traffic will re-open.
