There's a battle brewing between growth and quality of life in downtown Austin. Some Austinites feel they're on the losing end of urban development.
Residents living at the Plaza Lofts are concerned that a new 24-story high rise hotel/apartment combo is going to block sunlight coming into residents homes. The space between the two buildings is only 20-feet, and residents say that's too close for comfort.
If you have light and air that comes into your home and then you suddenly have no light and air that comes into your home and youre facing a solid surface wall, it's going to decrease the value, said Stephanie Sachnowitz.
The city council is meeting at 2pm, Tuesday, to vote on rezoning that lot.
The mayor and the city council are our last hope, said Cindy Taylor.
We were unable to reach the developers of the hotel. Residents at the Plaza fear this is a new trend Austin will see as it grows.
You buy a home in downtown Austin, beware of what surrounds you because you never what the city will allow to be built as your new neighbor, said Sachnowitz.
