Local church offers ashes to go this Ash Wednesday

Posted: Updated:

This Ash Wednesday you can get your ashes to go thanks to St. David's Episcopal Church. The church is expanding the program by adding a second location and additional hours.

The idea of offering ashes without attending an actual service started in 2007 at a church in St. Louis. Now churches across the country offer ashes to go or drive-thru options for people wishing to observe the day.

St. David's will offer ashes to commuters or people who may not have the time or inclination to observe the day. It's a way the church says it can take faith to everyday places.

Priests will be at 6th and Congress and 6th and Lamar from 8 am to 9 am and 11:30 am to 1 pm.

Revelers celebrated Mardi Gras on 6th street Tuesday night. Mardi Gras means Fat Tuesday. Traditionally, it's the last day for overindulgence before Ash Wednesday and weeks of fasting that come with lent.

According to a watch commander with the Austin Police Department there were no major incidents along 6th street. Sgt. Glen Kreger with APD was posted at House Park Tuesday night. He says between the hours of 9 pm and 5 am officers arrested 15 people suspected of drinking and driving.
