NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A New York City lawmaker is warning gay men that a killer may be targeting them.

Council member Daniel Dromm says that two openly gay men have been murdered within a week of each other in his district, which encompasses Jackson Heights and Elmhurst, Queens.

The first murder occurred at 32-23 91st Street on February 3, 2013 and the second murder occurred exactly one week later on February 10, 2013 at the Crown Motor Inn at 74-01 Queens Boulevard.

Dromm says that in both cases, the men were strangled.

In both cases, there was no forced entry into their rooms.

Both victims were middle aged.

Dromm plans a Tuesday press conference to raise awareness among the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.  Dromm is urging caution when using online dating services and when meeting someone for the first time.

It once was an accepted tactic as old as policing itself and, according to the NYPD, a key to the city's dramatic drop in crime: patrol officers stopping young men on the street to see if they're up to no good.
