Norristown Hoops Coach Is Beat Up After Heated Game

CHELTENHAM TWP., Pa. -

Greg Bates is an assistant basketball coach for Norristown High School.  He has been through many heated matches in the last 10 years, but none like Friday night's game at Cheltenham High School.

He said it ended with a massive brawl of at least 75 people, with one angry Cheltenham fan hitting him in the face with a brick.

"After I got hit I just look at the kid just…'you're kidding!" he said.

"We were beating them pretty bad and this was their senior night and I think that was kind of hard to take," Bates said.

Bates told FOX29 he could feel the tension building by the end of the fourth quarter and worried he wouldn't be able to get his team out of the building to the bus without a problem.

Sure enough, they left the locker room only to encounter a big fight in the hallway.  He said he tried to help a student being stomped on when a young person swung at him with a brick, hitting him in the forehead.

He said he drove to Chestnut Hill Hospital to get treated and left with six stitches.

Bates said he filed a police report and plans on taking further action but would not elaborate.  It's not clear what will happen to the attacker.

Bates said he is focused on getting his team ready for the start of playoffs next weekend.
