Firefighter suspended after buying booze in uniform
An Austin Firefighter has been suspended after he allegedly bought alcohol while in uniform.
According to The Austin Fire Chief, a concerned citizen notified the department after seeing a vehicle marked Austin Fire Department parked in front of a liquor store in Austin. While in the store the citizen witnessed Lieutenant William Sawers in uniform standing in a checkout line with a bottle of liquor in his hand.
The witnessed documented the incident with a cell phone and wrote down the license plate of the department vehicle.
Sawers admitted to the allegations, when confronted, stating he was off duty at the time of the purchase. During an interview, Sawers stated that he parked the Fire Department vehicle at a nearby apartment complex rather than leaving it in a secured city parking lot as directed by policy.
Sawers' actions were a violation of the civil service commission rule and he was suspended without pay for 15 days.
