Pedestrian hit, killed on Mopac

Posted: Updated:

A man is dead after being hit by a car while trying to cross the MOPAC Expressway Wednesday night. It happened at around 8:10 p.m.

Austin police responded to the scene of the fatal crash on north Mopac, near 45th Street. Authorities say the man was on foot when he was hit by a vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The southbound lanes of Mopac were shut down for a couple of hours while APD detectives processed the scene.

According to APD, 28 people died last year from being struck by motor vehicles. "The message is not to be crossing on the highways. The cars are going at a high rate of speed and they won't be able to brake in time," said CPL. Michelle Aparicio, with the Austin Police Department.

APD officers will be on the lookout for pedestrians who run across highways, and will make arrests in such cases.
