Mother of quints, surviving babies to travel back home

Posted: Updated:

A family is about to be reunited after both heartache and joy. Four babies and their proud new mom are on their way to the northeast, where dad is waiting.

"At first he was like, 'I'm going to be ok without them.' And now he says 'you don't send me enough pictures. I need more video,'" says Jessica Lucero.

A short time ago, the couple lost twins. Doctors told them they would never have children. That news came after Jessica's husband, Sgt. Esdras Lucero, had just returned from Iraq and Afghanistan with a war injury.

But in July 2012, a miracle happened and Jessica was able to become pregnant with quintuplets.

But on Christmas day, the first of the five babies, Leila Maxine, died during delivery. The four other babies survived and are healthy. They are now 6 weeks old.

"I have Leila with me. I went and picked up her ashes, she is with me. So I am taking all of my kids home. They are quints, they are not quads."

Lucero came out to Phoenix to give birth to her babies at Banner Good Samaritan, one of the nation's leading centers for multiple births.

Angel MedFlight is helping them by flying Jessica and the babies back for free on Wednesday to their hometown of Watertown, New York. Angel MedFlight also handled the Luceros' insurance.
